FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) REGARDING PAPER-WISE
EXEMPTION ON THE BASIS OF SCORING 60% OR MORE MARKS
Q1. What is the criteria for exemption on the basis of securing 60% or more
marks ?
Reply: The exemptions on the basis of securing 60% or more marks are granted
under two distinct conditions covered under The Company Secretaries
Regulations 1982 :-
First Condition:
A candidate who has appeared in the subjects of a group, for which he was
required to enroll and has secured sixty per cent or more marks in any subject
and a minimum of twenty-five per cent marks in each of the remaining subjects
of the group but has failed in the group, shall be exempted from that or those
subjects in which he secured sixty per cent or more marks, in any subsequent
examination.
Second Condition:
A candidate who has appeared in all papers of the group or module for which
he is enrolled without obtaining exemption in any paper of that group or module
and has failed in one paper comprised in the group or module, but secured
minimum of sixty per cent of the total marks of the remaining papers of the
module, all such remaining papers shall be exempted in any subsequent
examination.
He/ she will be declared to have passed in that module if he/she reappears in
the only paper in which he had failed and gets fifty per cent marks in any
subsequent examination
Q2. What is the Criteria for qualifying marks as per condition 1?
Reply: A candidate is required to secure at least 40% marks in each paper and
aggregate of 50% marks in the remaining papers to pass the module in which
he/she is availing exemption.
The marks obtained by a candidate in the paper(s) in which he/she had obtained
exemption on the basis of having secured sixty per cent or more marks shall
not be taken into account for computing his/her result of the remaining paper(s)
of the module in any subsequent examination.
Q3. I have two exemptions as per the first condition. Am I allowed to cancel
any one exemption out of the two exemptions?

Reply: Yes. Even after cancellation of one exemption, the other exemption will
remain valid.
Q4. What will happen if I appear in exempted paper as per the first condition?
Reply: If you appear in the examination disregarding the exemption granted and
shown in the Admit Card, the exemption will be cancelled without any further
notice. The exemption so cancelled can not be revived under any
circumstances.

Executive/Professional Programme Examination:

As per the second condition, I am eligible for exemptions in Paper 6 and Paper
7 . What will happen if I cancel one of the exemptions?
Reply: Considering the above specimen case, if you cancel (or appear in the
examinations) the exemption in say Paper 6, the exemption will be cancelled in
the said paper while retaining the exemption granted in Paper 7 as per the first
condition. However, if you cancel (or appear in the examination) the exemption
in say Paper 7, the exemption granted in both Paper 6 and Paper 7 will be
cancelled as you no longer fulfil the criteria given under the second condition
on cancellation of exemption granted in Paper 7.

Reply: Considering the above specimen case, if you cancel (or appear in the
examinations) the exemption in say paper 6, the exemption will be cancelled in
the said paper while retaining the exemption granted in paper 7 as per the first
condition. Similarly, if you cancel (or appear in the examination) the exemption
in say paper 7, the exemption granted in the said paper will be cancelled while
retaining the exemption granted in paper 6 as per the first condition.

Reply: Considering the above specimen case, if you cancel or appear in
examination in paper 2, then the exemption in paper 4 will be treated as
cancelled and exemption in paper 3 will remain valid. However if you cancel or
appear in examination in paper 3, then also the exemption in paper 4 will be
treated as cancelled and exemption in paper 2 will remain valid.

Q16. Is it essential to score atleast 25% marks in each paper to become eligible
for exemption under the 60% Marks criteria as per the first condition?
Reply : Yes, it is essential to score atleast 25% marks in each paper to become
eligible for exemption under the 60% Marks Criteria as per the first condition.
Further, appearance in all the papers covered under the group is essential to
become eligible for exemption as per the second condition.
Q17. Is it essential to score atleast 25% marks in each paper to become eligible

Reply : No. It is not essential to score 25% marks in each paper to become
eligible for exemption under the 60% Marks Criteria as per the second condition.
However, appearance in all the papers covered under the group is essential to
